Why did I read this book?
Around 5 years ago, my beloved friend Marghe introduced me to the fantastic Elena Ferrante. I started reading My Brilliant Friend and quickly devoured the four-book series known as the Neapolitan Novels. I absolutely fell in love with Ferrante’s writing, with her stories, with her.
When I heard that Elena Ferrante was publishing a new book, I rushed to buy it and devoured it in 3 days.
Note: If you haven’t read the Neapolitan Novels, I can’t recommend them enough. I would read them before reading the book this post is about. The saga is sincerely wonderful, a masterpiece. By far, the best description of the complexities of female friendship I’ve come across.
What is the book about?
A coming of age story showcasing the pains of adolescence: Giovanna, the main character, is leaving her childhood behind and it’s a painful process. As the story progresses, we get a clear picture of the turbulent thoughts and feelings that accompany her transition, and we experience how hard it can be to deal with so many changes all at once. Ferrante’s rich description of her characters shows us how fragile teenagers are, how prone to changing their minds 180° from one day to the next, and how even the slightest comments can throw them off balance for a long time. Ferrante makes a particular emphasis on the complicated relationship between teenagers and their physical appearance, and how important this physical aspect is for the adults in their lives. Most impressively, she’s able to perfectly capture one of those moments during adolescence when your whole world shatters and you begin to lose your self-worth and start feeling unfit for the world.
The lying life of adults: The author raises an excellent point: why do adults ask their children not to lie, yet they do it so often? Do adults lie to their children from a deep place reflecting who they wish they were while neglecting who they truly are? Why are appearances so important to adults? Is it possible not to lie to your children? What is the impact of these lies when they’re discovered by teenagers during a time of their lives when often they are already starting to shift away from their family and moving closer to friends and crushes?
Life realisations through the eyes of a teenager: One of the things I loved about the way this book is written was “observing” the main character’s life discovery processes. Ferrante’s rich descriptions enable us to appreciate how Giovanna starts trying to make sense of the world through her observations, rather than using the inherited truths that her parents gave her. I both enjoyed and suffered watching her opinions about life fluctuate constantly from one extreme to the other. And of course, the bits focused on her first encounters with love are fascinating.
“Lies, lies, adults forbid them and yet they tell so many”

Why should you read it?
Elena Ferrante is brilliant: No one really knows who Ferrante is. What we do know is that her writing is beautiful, intelligent and challenging. While this book is very different from the Neapolitan Novels, her brilliance and talent are palpable in all the pages.
An intense description of adolescent experiences: I’m very relieved that I’m no longer a teenager. I forgot how exhausting it was to be worried all the time about everything. There’s a moment in which Giovanna mentions how worried she is about smelling bad. Reading this instantly transported me to my teenage years, in which I constantly worried about forgetting to wear deodorant. I enjoyed comparing my adolescence to Giovanna’s and reflecting on the people and moments that shaped me most.
Learn more about life in Naples: In a different way to the Neapolitan Novels, Ferrante provides insight into life in Naples during the 1990s. It is always fascinating to read about this Italian region and its cultural richness.
Here someone might object: maybe you’re exaggerating, your father didn’t say, literally, Giovanna is ugly. It’s true, it wasn’t in his nature to utter such brutal words. But I was going through a period of feeling very fragile. I’d begun menstruating almost a year earlier, my breasts were all too visible and embarrassed me, I was afraid I smelled bad and was always washing, I went to bed lethargic and woke up lethargic. My only comfort at that time, my only certainty, was that he absolutely adored me, all of me. So that when he compared me to Aunt Vittoria it was worse than if he’d said: Giovanna used to be pretty, now she’s turned ugly.

“I don’t know, we perform acts that seem like acts but in fact they’re symbols, you know what symbols are, that’s something I should explain to you, good becomes evil without your realizing it.”
“Lies, lies, adults forbid them and yet they tell so many”
“...obedience is a skin disease”
I slipped away, and am still slipping away, within these lines that are intended to give me a story, while in fact I am nothing, nothing of my own, nothing that has really begun or really been brought to completion: only a tangled knot, and nobody, not even the one who at this moment is writing, knows if it contains the right thread for a story or is merely a snarled confusion of suffering, without redemption.
It’s good that you’re spending time with people who are better than you, it’s the only way to go up not down.
“Two years before leaving home my father said to my mother that I was very ugly. The sentence was uttered under his breath, in the apartment that my parents, newly married, had bought at the top of Via San Giacomo dei Capri, in Rione Alto.
Everything—the spaces of Naples, the blue light of a frigid February, those words—remained fixed. But I slipped away, and am still slipping away, within these lines that are intended to give me a story, while in fact I am nothing, nothing of my own, nothing that has really begun or really been brought to completion: only a tangled knot, and nobody, not even the one who at this moment is writing, knows if it contains the right thread for a story or is merely a snarled confusion of suffering, without redemption.”
//Sorry, I also read this book in Spanish, since it’s closer to Italian than English.
“Leía y me ponía nerviosa.
“¿Cómo me vestiría?
